Yang terbaik dilakukan untuk mengetahui perbedaan antara “word” vs “a+word” adalah dengan mengeceknya di kamus tiap kali menemukan kata-kata bersangkutan. Why? Karena dampak dari penambahan A ini tidak konstan. Ada yang berdampak pada perubahan klas kata (misalnya: dari kata kerja menjadi kata sifat), ada yang hanya menambahkan makna “SATU” pada kata yang mengikutinya, dan ada yang merubah arti.
Khusus untuk “sleep” vs “asleep“, sleep dapat berfungsi sebagai verb dan noun, sedangkan asleep adalah adjective dan adverb.
Contoh:
I usually sleep at 2 am. (as a verb)
I am so sleepy. I need a short sleep (as a noun)
I didn’t respond in the chat room last night because I fell asleep (as adverb)
I hate noises when I am asleep (as adjective)

OTHER VS ANOTHER
Other = yang lain; another = satu (lagi) yang lain; Kalau tidak diawali oleh THE (the other), gunakanlah another.
Contoh:

BROAD vs ABROAD
Broad adalah adjective yang berarti lebar, sedangkan abroad adalah adverb yang berarti luar negeri. Artinya berbeda jauh, bukan?
David has very broad shoulders.
David wants to study abroad.
BE vs BECOME
She became the light inside of me (= Dia (dulu) menjadi penerang hidupku)
She becomes the light inside of me (= Dia (sekarang) menjadi penerang hidupku)
She will become the light inside of me (= Dia akan menjadi penerang hidupku)
She will be the light inside of me (= Dia akan menjadi penerang hidupku)
Jadi, alasannya adalah karena konteksnya berbeda.
